Man charged in Red Deer murder, attempted murder incidents, remains behind bars

A man charged in a Red Deer homicide earlier this year and accused of attempted murder in another incident this month, made a brief appearance in Red Deer court Wednesday morning.

Quentin Lee Strawberry, 38, of the O’Chiese First Nation appeared in a wheelchair from the Edmonton Remand Centre (ERC). Defense lawyer Maurice Collard was unable to reveal at this point however as to why his client is currently wheelchair bound.

Strawberry was previously behind bars facing counts of second-degree murder and assault causing bodily harm in the March 29 death of Joseph Junior Alfred Gallant.

He was released on bail last month, but arrested again on Dec. 2 in relation to a separate incident.

That’s when members of the Red Deer RCMP Downtown Patrol Unit responded to an apartment building and discovered a male suffering from a head injury in an alleged attack with a machete.

A suspect was located and arrested by police on outstanding warrants for failure to comply with the conditions of his release.

Strawberry’s new charges include attempted murder, obstructing a police officer and six counts of breach of conditions.

He will remain in custody on his new charges, with his next court appearance on Jan. 8, 2020.

Strawberry is also scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 28, 2020 in relation to Gallant’s homicide.
