Hatters gather in the hundreds for Remembrance Day

atMedicine Hat, AB – Medicine Hatters once again turned out en masse to Remembrance Day ceremonies at Riverside Memorial Park, festooning the city’s cenotaph with wreaths laid in honour of the 317 city citizens who died in action fighting for the Canadian Forces.

For resident John Hart, Remembrance Day is a time to honour his father who served in the 1st Special Service Force as well as a fellow Hatter who was in the joint US, Canada commando unit known as the Devil’s Brigade during World War Two.

“I lost my father a long time ago and I remember him all the time – especially his service,” said Hart. “I met many of his buddies and it brought him closer to me through the comradery they shared during the war.”

It’s that comradery which British veteran Eddie Devine said transcends boundaries and time when it comes to soldiering.

“They fought for each other and they died for each other,” said Devine. “And that hasn’t changed over the years in any armed services whether your British or Canadian. You fight with your comrades along, along with other nations, for peace.

“And hopefully one day we’ll have it.”
