CFB Suffield to conduct prescribed fires on base this weekend
MEDICINE HAT, AB — CFB Suffield will be conducting prescribed fires over the weekend on the base.
A news release from the base sent Friday afternoon says the base and Environment and Climate Change Canada will be conducting the fires Saturday to Monday. The fires will affect a few small areas of grassland in the CFB Suffield National Wildlife Area, an area of the base where no ground military training occurs to protect wildlife habitat and native grasslands.
The fire is required, the release says “to benefit the fire-dependant ecosystem and species at risk within the CFB Suffield National Wildlife Area, including the Ord’s Kangaroo Rat.”
Fire crews will be on scene and mitigation measures will be in place throughout the operation. The base says the decision to conduct or postpone any prescribed fire will be based on the weather.
