Medicine Hat, AB – A snowfall record has been set as a winter storm has made driving on area highways treacherous on Sunday.

As of Sunday afternoon, traffic on westbound lanes on the Trans-Canada west of Redcliff are affected by a jack-knifed semi while eastbound lanes near Gleichen are affected by a spun out vehicle.

Medicine Hat, Cypress County and areas across southern Alberta remain under a winter storm warning with driving not recommend and Brooks, Bassano and Redcliff RCMP are advising against travel.

Mounties say that visibility on the Trans-Canada Highway is down to 100 metres with multiple incidents of collisions and cars which have left the road.

Mounties are warning that while a tow truck ban is not in effect, RCMP aren’t utilizing tow services unless it’s an emergency. They warn those requiring a tow truck will likely be in for a substantial wait.

Within Medicine Hat, few vehicle collisions have been reported to police as of Sunday afternoon.

The record snowfall for Sept. 28 was 3.8 cm recorded in 1925.

Environment Canada is forecasting 5 to 10 cm during the day on Sunday with another 10 to 15 cm overnight.

Areas around Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass could see up to 100 cm of snow in some areas with 40 to 60 cm likely across southwestern Alberta.
