MEDICINE HAT, AB — The federal NDP has named their candidate for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner for the election.

Elizabeth Thomson will represent the party in the upcoming election.

Thomson, who holds a Master’s of Law in International Human Rights and International Criminal Law, was born and raised in Medicine Hat. She is currently the community connections coordinator with Saamis Immigration.

She is currently the president of the Alberta NDP constituency association in Medicine Hat.

“I’ve always kind of been more into progressive politics, more interested in left-leaning issues,” she said. “That’s why I pursued human rights through my university degrees. I just feel the NDP speaks to the issues that I’m concerned about, and pursues a route of achieving the best life for everyone.”

Thomson joins Glen Motz (Conservative Party of Canada), Andrew Nelson (People’s Party of Canada) and Shannon Hawthorne (Green Party of Canada) as candidates who have confirmed they’re running in the riding.

The Liberal Party has not yet named a candidate for the riding.

Thomson says the NDP is an option for voters who are looking for something different from previous governments.

“There’s lots of progressive people in Medicine Hat, and there are lots of people that are frustrated with the constant back and forth Conservative, Liberal governments,” she said. “The NDP are the third way, and we are the ones running for the people.”

Thomson says she will be door knocking in the riding starting this weekend.

Parties have until September 30 to nominate candidates, with the list of confirmed candidates being known on October 2.

The election will take place October 21.
