Police respond to collision on Highway 1

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A 53-year-old man was charged following a motor vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway that caused detours Friday morning.

According to a news release from the Medicine Hat Police Service, the collision happened at approximately 7:50 a.m. at the Sixth Street Southwest intersection. A 2016 BMW was travelling west on the highway when it lost control at the intersection, hitting the traffic light standard.

The 53-year-old man was the only person in the car at the time, and was not injured.

Police were called in to direct traffic, detouring drivers down Red Deer Drive to First Street while the scene was cleaned up.

City crews repaired the traffic light in the morning, with the highway beign cleared just before 10 a.m.

The driver of the BMW was charged with failure to stop before entering an intersection on a yellow light and received a $155 fine.

Police estimate the total damage at $80,000.
