RCMP confirm 11-year-old boy killed in Wednesday collision near Oyen

OYEN, AB — RCMP in Oyen say an 11-year-old boy was killed in a motor vehicle collision near the town Wednesday afternoon.

The collision occurred at Highway 9 at Range Road 60, northwest of Oyen. RCMP responded at 3:48 p.m.

The collision involved an SUV and two tractor trailer units.

The 11 year old was confirmed dead at the scene, and RCMP say he was a passenger of the SUV, along with four other family members. The family members, which included two adults and two children, were transported to hospital. The driver of the SUV has since been released, while the other three occupants remain in serious condition.

Neither of the drivers of the tractor trailers were injured.

The collision remains under investigation, but the preliminary investigation indicates one of the tractor trailers was stopped for construction, with the SUV stopped behind it. The second semi was travelling in the same diection and struck the rear of the SUV.

Traffic was detoured around the scene until 11:40 p.m.

RCMP will provide an update “when and if appropriate,” a release states.
