Deadline looms for undeveloped road maintenance program in Cypress County

Aug 8, 2019 | 6:22 PM

DUNMORE, AB — Cypress County is accepting applications for its undeveloped road maintenance program.

The program allows ratepayers in the county to request maintenance to undeveloped roads, which are primarily found in the more rural areas of the county, for the 2020 construction year. It will help expand the road network in the county and help farmers and ranchers access agricultural parcels.

“The program is designed to create better access to rural Cypress County,” said Kim Dalton, public works operations supervisor with the county. “It’s been very successful, according to council and to its ratepayers, because council has received positive feedback upon the program.”

Residents in the county need to submit roads to the county for consideration by council, which will take place in the fall.

“It’s a roadway or trail that’s in a road allowance,” said Dalton. “This could be establishment of a new one, or rehabbing or developing one to a higher standard.”

So far, 13 undeveloped roads received maintenance this summer. Dalton says there is a limit of $50,000 to be allocated for each project.

The deadline for applications is August 31. They’re available at the county’s office or online at http://www.cypress.ab.ca.
