City hosting river bank cleanup

Medicine Hat, AB – The South Saskatchewan River plays a major role in Medicine Hat.

That’s why the city is putting a focus on making sure it’s shoreline stays clean.

The city is teaming up with the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup to pick up littler along the river at Stratchcona Island Park later this month.

Organizers are asking residents to come out and help the cleanup effort on Saturday August 24.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon and snacks with be provided at the end.

Environmental Sustainability Officer Jass Baidwan says because of everything the river provides, it’s important the community gets involved.

“The river is defiantly important because of all the recreational opportunities that go on in Medicine Hat as well as providing wildlife habitat, a place to live.” Baidwan explained. “And we also we get our water from the river. So it’s important that we keep our river clean and especially with plastics.”
