Coutts, AB – The Canadian Border Services Agency and RCMP announced today they were able to seize 50 kg of methamphetamine at the Coutts, Alberta border crossing.

On July 28 at approximately 5 p.m , CBSA officers at Coutts referred a commercial driver returning to Canada with an empty trailer for further examination.

While searching the truck cab, they uncovered a box and duffel bag containing 33 bags of methamphetamine with a weight of 50 kg.

It is the largest methamphetamine seizure made by CBSA in Southern Alberta, equalling about 500,000 doses.

It has an estimated street value of around $3 million.

On July 29, the RCMP charged Asif Mir, 40, of Calgary with importation of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

“This enforcement highlights the important role and good work of frontline officers at border crossings, who are part of a larger team working closely with the RCMP to reduce the amount of dangerous drugs on Canadian streets and impact international drug smuggling.” said Guy Rook, the CBSA’s director of southern Alberta.

Mir is in custody and has a bail hearing scheduled for today.
