MEDICINE HAT, AB — Jaymon Cervantes pitched eight scoreless innings, and the Medicine Hat Mavericks brought in five runs in the third inning to secure a commanding 10-0 victory over the Fort McMurray Giants at Athletic Park on Thursday night.

The victory moves the Mavs into sole possession of second place in the WCBL’s Western Division, one game ahead of the Lethbridge Bulls, who lost in Okotoks.

In what was the first of three straight against the Giants at AP, Medicine Hat has now won six of the last seven. Their offence was led by Colton Wright, Collin Klingensmith, and PJ Garcia, who each collected three hits.

Klingensmith also notched three runs and Sal Rodriguez drove in two runs.

These two will collide again on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

First Inning:

Medicine Hat drew first blood off of a wild throw to first base by the catcher. Collin Klingensmith, who was recently named the WCBL’s Player of the Week, ran over the dish to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

Third Inning:

Medicine Hat strengthened its lead to 2-0 with a rocket from Colton Wright to right-center field, allowing Sal Rodriguez to score from third. A wild-throw to first sent Wright to second and Nolan Rattai to third, but Tito Jones struck out moments later to end the inning.

Fourth Inning:

The gloves have come off. Medicine Hat threw five on the board to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The scoring parade began with Collin Klingensmith blasting an RBI-single to bring in Cameron Pope. Two batters later, Rodriguez sacrificed himself to allow Klingensmith to make it 4-0.

Giants starter Ike Buxton lasted just one more batter, walking Rattai before Halen Knoll took over the mound.

On Knoll’s first batter, Colton Wright struck his third hit and collected his second RBI with a single to score PJ Garcia. Jones’ RBI-single to bring home Rattai rounded out an offensively sound inning for the Mavericks.

Fifth Inning:

Medicine Hat continues to feed its lead. Garcia blasted his second hit deep into the right field wall, which brought in Klingensmith’s third run of the game. Garcia finished his second loop after Rodriguez sent a shallow shot into center-right field to make it 9-0.

Sixth Inning:

On top of their unruly offence, Mavericks starter Jaymon Cervantes has been very impressive. The veteran right-hander has pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits without a walk.

Seventh Inning:

Cervantes continued his impressive performance, going three up, three down to send the match into the seventh inning stretch.

Eighth Inning:

Despite walking his first batter, Cervantes appears primed to pitch his second complete game of the season. He’s pitched eight scoreless innings in a game where his performance has been overshadowed by the Mavericks offence.

The Mavericks reached double-digits on the scoreboard with a sac-fly from Freddy Walker.
