FIREWORKS IN CYPRESS COUNTY

Cypress County has no plan to create fireworks bylaw

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The use of fireworks has been a big topic in Medicine Hat, with city council debating the topic since May.

Council has now decided to draft a bylaw to ban them in the city, but Cypress County has different plans.

Low hazard fireworks were illegal prior to changes to the National Fire Code, requiring any municipality to implement a bylaw if they want to keep fireworks off the streets and the shelves.

Cypress County has a fire ban from March 1 to October 31, and that includes a ban on fireworks.

“For Cypress County we are under a fire restriction, under bylaw 201840, our fire services bylaw, fireworks are not permitted,” says Tarolyn Aaserud, chief administrative officer for Cypress County.

As a result, the county has no plan to discuss the topic.

However, the purchase and sale of fireworks are still legal.

“We do not have a bylaw though that regulates the sale and purchase of fireworks, however its contravening the bylaw if someone was to blast them away,” says Aaserud.

Aaserud says if fireworks become an issue, the topic will be brought up to council.
