INTERVIEWS: Female racers on the rise at Medicine Hat Speedway

MEDICINE HAT, AB — For years, stock-car racing in southeast Alberta has been a male-dominated sport.

The Medicine Hat Speedway, however, is seeing a sharp increase in adrenaline-filled ladies taking the driver’s seat, and are making headway in the season standings.

The Baby Grand class began its 2019 campaign last weekend featuring four drivers in total — all of which female.

16-year-old Faith Luther took home the checkered flag ahead of Robyn Abel, Shaelyn Dolter, and Megan Preston who all agree they’ve created a special bond on the raceway.

These four ladies are part of a growing trend of female drivers across numerous classes, such as 14-year-old Emma Fitzpatrick, who remains on top of the Super class standings despite taking the start-line against racers four-times her age.

CHAT Sports caught up with Luther and Abel to hear more about the recent rise in female participation, how they’re encouraging more girls to try the sport out, and the unique relationship they share with other females at the track.
