Solid police work has lead to the arrest of a suspect Redcliff Mounties believe was involved in a collision between a cyclist and motorist last week that left a man with life-threatening injuries.

“At this point, it was actually diligent investigation that lead to this by the members,” said Redcliff Staff-Sgt. Sean Maxwell of the arrest. “I’m really proud of the members here at this detachment and the work they have been doing.”

Maxwell said that along with the Sunday evening arrest of a suspect in the incident, “We’ve located the vehicle. Right now that is informing the investigation in terms of where it’s heading right now.”

Maxwell said the suspect was arrested on Sunday evening with potential charges ranging from provincial Traffic Safety Act violations to Criminal Code offences.

The injuried man remains in hospital, “with very grievous injuries,” said Maxwell, adding the cyclist’s condition may factor into the charges laid against the suspect.

The collision occurred on July 8, 2019 in the westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway just east of Medicine Hat, according to RCMP.

The injured male cyclist was found by a passing motorist who alerted first-responders who then air-lifted the cyclist to Calgary with serious injuries.
