Cyclist in life threatening condition after hit and run on highway

Jul 9, 2019 | 12:00 PM

REDCLIFF, AB – Redcliff RCMP are asking the public for any information regarding a hit and run Monday night on Highway 1.

At approximately 9:00 p.m. on Monday, July 8, RCMP responded to a hit and run on the highway just east of Medicine Hat.

A male cyclist heading westbound was hit and left on the side of the road until another motorist stopped and called 911.

“It’s troubling from a humanity standpoint, it’s troubling from an investigation standpoint,” said Redcliff RCMP S/Sgt. Sean Maxwell. “It’s just a situation we don’t want to have and we’re trying to solve it. Friends and family of this individual will want to know what happened to him.”

He was rushed to hospital in life threatening condition, and has since been air-lifted to Calgary where he remains in what police are calling ‘grave condition.’

His identity is not being released, though police say he was not a local and was passing through on a cycling trip.

Police do not yet have any leads on the vehicle involved in the hit and run, but were able to recover a large piece of black plastic at the scene that may have come from the suspected vehicle.

“Unfortunately it’s a little bit like finding a needle in a haystack,” said Maxwell. “We do have a piece of vehicle that we believe was involved. It may be a mirror piece or something that would be housed somewhere outside a vehicle. But, it was definitely broken off.”

That’s prompted police to make a plea to the public for information, adding people should be on the lookout for vehicles with right side damage.

“If anybody has got some damage to a vehicle or they see damage to a vehicle that may be unexplained, it would be on the passenger side most likely, please give us a call and we can look into it,” said Maxwell.

Anyone with information is asked to call Redcliff RCMP at (403) 548-2288 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
