U.S. Government shutdown causing delays for NEXUS card applications

OTTAWA, ONT. — The Canada Border Services Agency is warning Canadians applying for NEXUS cards that there will be delays in processing their applications.

Due to the U.S. government shutdown, the American portion of the application is not being completed. Applicants will have to reschedule their interview with U.S. Customs and Border Protection once the shutdown is over.

According to Global News, the agents who review applications on the American side are considered non-essential employees.

The NEXUS program allows travellers who have been previously approved in the United States and Canada to use specially designated border crossings without being questioned by customs and immigration officers. To receive a card, applicants need to undergo a background check from both American and Canadian law enforcement.

The pass lasts for five years.
