MEDICINE HAT, AB — A former civilian employee at CFB Suffield has been charged with fraud following an investigation.

The Canadian Armed Forces announced on Thursday that Scott MacDonald, a retired mess manager at CFB Suffield, is facing one charge of fraud and one count of false entry in a document in connection with an investigation which started two years ago.

According to a release, MacDonald was suspected of fraud in February 2016 following a stock taking process at the Crowfoot Messes, with military police initiating an investigation on February 17.

The alleged offences took place between 2005 and 2016, and the total amount of the fraud is believed to be over $90,000. MacDonald was charged on August 20.

It’s the second fraud case the Canadian Armed Forces announced on Thursday. The military announced Shirley Lemieux, an administrative assistant at CFB Borden in Ontario, is charged with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000, forgery and breach of trust.

The alleged offences in Lemieux’s case occurred between January and April 2018, and the investigation began after account discrepancies were discovered. The total theft of funds is estimated to be over $70,000.

MacDonald and Lemieux’s cases are unrelated.

Both cases are being tried in civilian court. Lemieux appears in Barrie provincial court on September 10.

MacDonald appears in Medicine Hat provincial court on October 18.
