Four from Brooks facing 85 charges, including fraud

BROOKS, AB —Four people in Brooks are in custody and facing 85 charges after an alleged fraud operation was uncovered in the city.

On Monday, members of the Brooks RCMP arrested a suspect on several outstanding warrants in a rental suite on Sutherland Drive in Brooks. During the arrest, investigators discovered evidence of a possible fraud and forgery operation.

RCMP executed another search warrant at the same location, and at an apartment suite in the 200 block of 4th Street West. During their searches, officers discovered numerous stolen cheques, stolen credit cards, stolen identifications, stolen and forged documents. Computers, printers and quantities of suspected methamphetamine were also seized.

Richard Strong (33), Caitlin Materi (22), David Kearley (31) and Ursula Young (24) were arrested and are facing a total of 85 charges related to fraud, forgery, possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance and identity theft.

All four are scheduled to appear in Brooks provincial court on August 1.

RCMP believe hundreds of people from Brooks and the surrounding areas may have been victimized by the alleged fraud. They add victims and owners of the stolen property will be contacted.
