MEDICINE HAT, AB — The city was hit hard Saturday with rain that caused flash flooding on certain streets.
12 St North in Crescent Heights and South Railway St experienced large pools of water that’s caused motorists to slow down through those areas.
South Railway Street cleared up quickly but 12 St North remained flooded for a while.
Craig Maunder, operations engineer with the City of Medicine Hat, says city crews were out responding to calls and checking areas that are prone to flooding.
“We received our calls around about that 12:15 p.m.- 12:30 p.m. mark there with regards to the downpour that was on the more likely Northeast corner of our city,” said Maunder, “We responded with individuals to go out there and check on the sites and make sure any hazards were addressed.
One issue they are dealing with is when there is a heavy rainfall, the main trunk line can’t handle the pressure and it causes some manhole covers to be exposed.
The city is currently handing the issues but advise drivers to be careful when driving through the large pools of water that have accumulated.
“You don’t know whats underneath them, whether a man hole has been discharged or any other damage has been caused underneath those,” said Maunder. “As well it’s just good to be a good neightbour becasue any waves that are caused by those drivers can impact properties on each side.”
Maunder says the were no reported damages to any of the infrastructure.
Areas that had pools of water were looked at by the city and were barricaded if they posed a threat to the public’s safety.
