Farmer’s Day marked in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat residents had the opportunity to thank farmers and ranchers for their work on Friday

UFA stores across Alberta celebrated Farmer’s Day Friday afternoon. In Medicine Hat, the event included a barbecue and a silent auction to raise money for Halo Air Ambulance.

Farmer’s Day was a provincial holiday in Alberta from 1945 to 1975, which took place on the second Friday in June. The holiday is meant to recognize workers in the agriculture industry and appreciate the people who help put food on the table.

“I feel very strongly about it, not only working here, but I’ve always felt strongly about the farmers and the agriculture business and what they provide,” said Blaine Cheek, manager of the city’s UFA Branch. “It’s a necessity.”

“I think it’s really good,” said Buddy Simon, a farmer in the Bow Island area. “I hate to say it, but some towns people don’t realize what the farmers do for their community. I think it’s nice to appreciate the farmers and ranchers.”

UFA has been hosting Farmer’s Day events since 2010.
