MEDICINE HAT, AB — Fight fans in Medicine Hat will be treated to a night of hard-hitting action Saturday night, as Fists of Fury 14 takes over the Cypress Centre.

The annual kickboxing and Muay Thai event has seven local fighters will be competing on the card.

“It just gets better and better every year,” said Jamie Droeske with SACA Kickboxing.

Among the local fighters taking part at the event is Pietro De Andrade, a former member of the Medicine Hat College Rattlers basketball team.

“He’s an extremely dedicated athlete,” said Droeske. “When he wants something, and it’s in his reach, he’ll get there. He doesn’t miss a day of training. If he does, he’s done something else. He’s just dedicated, and we couldn’t ask for a better role model for the rest of the club.

De Andrade, who stands six feet, eight inches tall, took up the sport nine months ago.

“I always had the fighting thing inside myself that I wanted to explore a little bit more,” he said. “Because of basketball, i didn’t have the time to work on that.

“Right after my fifth season, I decided to try new avenues and start fighting.”

De Andrade is making his Medicine Hat debut this weekend. He says there are several similarities between basketball and kickboxing.

“My main idea is winning, I want to win all my fights, and I want to make myself better everyday,” he said. “I had that mentality with basketball, and it’s transferred into kickboxing.”

Another local fighter, Ryan Clarke, will be making his fighting debut at the event. Clarke came to SACA Kickboxing from Temple Fitness, and fell in love with the sport quickly.

Clarke is looking forward to his debut in front of a hometown crowd.

“The guys at work were saying they were going to be pretty rowdy, so they’ll keep me going,” he said.

Doors open for Fists of Fury 14 at 6 p.m., with the first fight at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at SACA Kickboxing or at the door on Saturday.
