BROOKS, AB — Two people were taken to hospital as a precaution following an ammonia leak at the JBS meat processing plant in Brooks.
Trent Bancarz, a spokesperson with Alberta Labour, confirmed to CHAT News a minor ammonia leak took place at the meat processing plant on Sunday.
Production was shut down at the plant to contain the leak, and Bancarz said the company was following all procedures.
On Monday, however, two employees complained about breathing problems.
“As a precaution, they were taken to the hospital, and they were examined and released,” he said.
Bancarz said the incident was not one that would normally be reported to Occupational Health and Safety.
“The way the current laws are, if a worker, as a result of something that happens at a work site is hospitalized for at least two days, or two days and more, then by law, you have to report the incident to OHS,” he said.
Bancarz says the information was a result of a conversation with management at the plant, which is still operating as normal.
