BLAIRMORE, AB — Two men from the Crowsnest Pass are facing charges after the RCMP explosive disposal unit had to dismantle a homemade explosive on Monday.

Early Monday morning, a concerned citizen reported to police that they had seen two intoxicated people in possession of what was believed to be a homemade explosive. The witness also overheard the two suspects talking about trying to blow it up.

RCMP located the pair at a home in Blairmore shortly after receiving the information, where another two firearms were also seized.

Both cooperated with police, and were arrested without incident.

“This was a big public safety concern for our community, and we were fortunate no one was hurt. I want to thank the public for helping us to resolve this quickly and safely,” Cpl. Shayne Gudmundson, detachment commander, said in a media release.

Zachary Dillabough, 20 from Blairmore, and Conrad Ockey, 19 from Coleman, have since been charged with making an explosive, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats and possession of a firearm without a licence.

The pair have been remanded into custody. They are scheduled for a bail hearing on May 9 in Pincher Creek Provincial Court.
