Investigation underway into police shooting in Edmonton

EDMONTON – An investigation is underway after Edmonton police shot a man who was allegedly pointing a firearm at an intersection.

Darren Derko, acting Deputy Chief, says at least seven 911 calls were received about the man, with one called reporting they saw the man loading a weapon at the intersection of 137 Avenue and 50 Street.

Derko says when two officers arrived at the scene, they saw him pointing what appeared to be a firearm at people. Derko says when two officers arrived at the scene, the man pointed the gun at them.

One of the officers shot the man, and he’s been taken to hospital. Derko says the extent of the man’s injuries is unknown.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death, has taken over the investigation.

The incident is the second police shooting in Edmonton in less than a week. Last Thursday, a 55-year-old man was fatally shot in the city’s southwest. According to police, the man was pulled over on suspicion of impaired driving. An encounter occurred, which resulted in the man being shot by police. Officers attempted to revive the man, but he passed away at the scene.
