UPDATE: Redcliff RCMP announce man has been identified

Feb 17, 2017 | 12:24 PM

UPDATE: Redcliff RCMP announced Friday afternoon they have successfully identified the man. RCMP thanked the Southeastern Alberta Search and Rescue for their work to identify the man, along with members of the public and the media for their tips.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Curtis Peters says it was SEASAR that led to the man being identified.

“They were helping us by canvassing,” said Peters over the phone from Airdrie. “(SEASAR) backtracked, followed the mans tracks and started knocking on doors and checking the area and we were able to find somebody who recognized the photos, and got him back to where he belonged.”

Though the man, who’s from Medicine Hat, was identified, RCMP say they’re still looking into the circumstances surrounding him being found Tuesday night.

“We’ll still do some follow-up to find out why he was where he was and make sure that there isn’t anything else that we need to deal with,” said Peters.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Medicine Hat, AB — Redcliff RCMP have released photos and a description of the unidentified man who was found in medical distress walking along Highway 3 near the outskirts of Medicine Hat Tuesday night.

The man, who was spotted by EMS around 10:30 p.m. and taken to Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, hasn’t been able to tell police who he is and no one has reported a missing person since he was found.

“At this point all we know is his description,” said Cpl. Shane Ryan Friday morning.

The man is described as follows:

– Caucasian male
– 30 yrs old
– approximately 6 feet tall
– 190 lbs
– brown hair
– blue eyes
– Tattoo’s (left shoulder/ bicep area of a bighorn sheep and Playboy bunny)

The man was wearing a red hooded sweater, tan work pants,  tan work boots

Volunteers with The Southeast Alberta Search & Rescue Association were activated Thursday night to assist Redcliff RCMP, and on Friday morning they were going door-to-door in the area where the man was found to see if anyone in the neighbourhood could held identify him.

“We have 12 search members out here today in the local area conducting a search,” said De Lea Mapstone with SEASAR.

The man remains in hospital recovering from exposure related injuries, and AHS says they take into account whether people have the appropriate resources in place in the community before safely discharging anyone.

“It’s not too often you call search and rescue for a person you already found,” says Ryan. “But what we’re going to try and do is backtrack from where he was found, and broaden our search to find out where he belongs instead of who he is.”

Anyone that recognizes the man is asked to call Redcliff RCMP at (403) 548-2288.
