Medicine Hat, AB — Janick Lacroix showed why he’s one of the top up and coming amateur boxers in Alberta this weekend with two impressive bouts.

At the Southside Event Centre Friday night Lacroix beat Josh Beck via a first round knockout, then on Saturday the 14-year-old followed that up with a unanimous decision win over Ocean Desnomye.

“This weekend helped me for nationals,” said Lacroix after his fight against Desnomye. “It’s (a) more than one day tournament.”

Lacroix dictated things early and often against Desmoyne in their three round tilt. A vicious body blow delivered by the ‘Hatter towards the end of the first sent Desmoyne reeling, forcing him to take a knee on the canvas.

“When you go to the body it knocks the wind out of them so it’s easy to go to the head after that, they’ll drop.”

Lacroix is now 15-1 (2 KOs) in his amateur career after the two fights this weekend. In April he’ll be heading to nationals which are being held in Quebec city.

Two other Medicine Hat fighters also took to the ring Saturday night.

Junior boxer Jeremiah Warnke lost by unanimous decision to Bryson Reis out of Lethbridge, and the final fight featuring a local pugilist pitted ‘Hatter Lance Kusiak against Aram Minasyan from Calgary. The 23-year-old Kusiak was in tough against the heavy handed Minasyan, who won after the referee called a stop to things in the second round.

“Fought my heart out, never gave up, so I feel good about it,” said Kusiak following the bout. Even though it wasn’t the outcome he was hoping for, Kusiak says he views the losses in his career as wins.

“Boxing changed my life,” he says. “It made me feel good as a person, put me in the right path.”
