Temporary evacuation at the Hospital due to a bad odour

MEDICINE HAT – Staff and patients at the Medicine Hat regional hospital had to be evacuated from a wing of the hospital due to an unusual smell.

People were moved out of 4West, the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre and the laboratory, to areas of the hospital that were unaffected by the odour issue. Officials say the bad odor was causing discomfort to people in those areas.

Alberta Health Services said the internal evacuation was done for precautionary reasons and the safety of staff and patients was never at risk.

Emergency Services were called in to assist with the investigation and resolution regarding the source of the unusual odour. AHS said the source of the smell was determined to come from construction work happening on a storm line outside the hospital.

AHS said the issue has now been resolved and they are in the process of returning patients to their regular care spaces.
