Clement’s late goal lifts Cubs to 4-3 victory over Strathmore

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Matt Clement stepping up as the hero for the Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs on Saturday with a late game-winner against the Strathmore Wheatland Kings.

Clement scored a pair of goals on Saturday for the Cubs, including a marker with 31 seconds remaining in regulation to clinch a 4-3 win for the boys in blue and silver.

Medicine Hat held a 2-1 lead in the second period thanks to a goal from Kaidin Hodgson, but Strathmore netted a tying goal just over a minute later from Ryan Grasdahl.

Tied 2-2 in the third, the Wheatland Kings took their first lead of the game off the stick of Garret Vander Ploeg exactly one minute into the period.

Cubs leading scorer Noah Irvine tied up the game at 3-3 on the power play with 10:42 left in regulation, before Clement scored the game-winner in the final minute of play.

Josh Breznik was steady between the pipes for Medicine Hat, making 23 saves to register his third win in a Cubs uniform.

Winning three of their last five games, the 9-13-0 Cubs have made up some ground on Strathmore for fifth place in the South Division and trail the Wheatland Kings by only four points.

It’s a road game for the Cubs on Sunday afternoon, as they hit the highway for a date with the Blackfalds Wranglers at 3:30 pm.
