Medicine Hat could be getting another hotel.

According to Curtis Presber, the Chief of Finance and Operations at Meadowlands Development Corporation, a Best Western will be constructed in the south end in the near future.

Presber stated that the hotel would have 120 suites, and be around 4-5 stories in height. The location is just north of the Cheesecake Cafe, along Strachan Road.

It will fall under the Premier and Executive Residency brand of the Best Western chain, with a construction cost of close to $15 million.

The construction, according to Presber, would begin in late 2017 or early 2018, with no firm time frame in mind.

Presber indicated that The Sun City Hotels investment group is the main driver of the project. Engineering work for the subdivision and servicing of the land is ongoing, pending approval from the municipal government.

“Once we have a serviced lot to hand over to the owners, they will be putting a shovel in the ground as weather and permits permit,” said Presber.

Presber also cited the locally-led efforts as a boost for the project.

“This hotel is proceeding this fall,” said Presber.

“Some of the other hotel developments that have been announced for this area haven’t been given a firm timeline as to when they’re actually going to get built. These guys are anxious to get going.”

Presber was not aware of the project coming in front of the municipal authorities as of yet.
