May 6, 2026 | 11:02 AM

The City of Medicine Hat announced Wednesday that they have secured funding to support a new, multi-year workforce attraction initiative.

Half of the funding will come from the Alberta government’s Northern and Regional Economic Development (NRED) program through a $110,000 grant.

This will provide half of the budgeted funding for

Opportunity is Calling in Medicine Hat is a coordinated marketing campaign designed to attract skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and remote workers to the city while addressing critical gaps in the local workforce.

“This investment allows us to take a more strategic, collaborative approach to workforce attraction,” Medicine Hat’s Director of Economic Development Selena McLean-Moore said.

“By aligning our messaging, amplifying our strengths, and leveraging regional partnerships, we are positioning Medicine Hat as an attractive destination for talent and investment.”

The initiative is a partnership between the City of Medicine Hat, Tourism Medicine Hat, and Community Futures Entre-Corp. It runs through the second quarter of 2027.

It expands existing efforts of the Move to Medicine Hat website and the Talent Ambassador Program.

A new Leadership Ambassador Program to help local leaders and employers promote the community is also part of the initiative.

Representatives from the City say the campaign will highlight competitive advantages in Medicine Hat, including affordability, quality of life, and opportunities across key sectors such as agriculture, aerospace, and healthcare.

They add that by connecting prospective workers with real job opportunities and showcasing the regional lifestyle benefits, the initiative aims to reduce barriers to relocation and strengthen long-term economic resilience.

“Businesses follow talent,” McLean-Moore said.

“By attracting and retaining a skilled workforce, we’re not only supporting our existing industries and addressing workforce gaps – we’re also creating the conditions for future growth, investment, and diversification.”

Medicine Hat city council approved a budget amendment for the $222,000 marketing initiative, Opportunity is Calling in Medicine Hat, during Monday’s meeting.

The budgeted funding breakdown includes $111,000 from the announced provincial grant, a $12,000 contribution from Tourism Medicine Hat, and the reallocation of $99,000 in unused operating funds.

The unused funds came from the 2023 MOE – Settlement, Integration & Language Project (SILP).
