It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mrs. Bouwina “Winnie” Slootweg, beloved wife of Nicholas Slootweg, announce her passing at the Riverview Care Centre in Medicine Hat on Monday, July 19, 2021, at the age of 85 years. Winnie was born on November 21, 1935, in Midwolda, Groningen, The Netherlands. She came to Canada with her family in 1953, first settling in the Taber area where she worked in the sugar beet fields. Winnie moved to Medicine Hat where she met and later married Nicholas on December 10, 1960, and were married for 60 years. Winnie worked for a number of years with ATB and faithfully volunteered at The Post. She was selfless and enjoyed giving back to her friends, family and community. She was a long time member of Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church as well as the Dutch Canadian Society. Winnie enjoyed singing and sang in the church choir as well as the Selah Singers. She loved the poodles she had over the years, Champ and Georgie. Winnie enjoyed going for walks and could often be seen in the Hill area with her furry companion. Winnie was a wonderful wife and mother and will be deeply missed by her husband of 60 years, Nicholas; children, >Nicholas Jr. (Debbie) Slootweg, Adrienne Slootweg and Anthony Slootweg; two sisters, Grace Baum and Maria (Dave) Stretch as well as numerous extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Antoon and Arendina Knippers and her son, Nicholas Jr. A private, by invitation Celebration of Winnie’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel with Murray Jaster officiating.
