Rudolf Laubenstein, known to most as Rudy, Dad, Opa or Uncle, passed away on August 26, 2022 at the age of 100 years. He was born June 3, 1922 in Bessarabia, Moldova.
Rudy was predeceased by his wife, Magdalena; daughter, Erica; granddaughter, Karyssa Siggelkow; and son-in-law, Lorne Cook. Rudy was also predeceased by his parents; brother, Fred (Katarina) and numerous relatives. He leaves behind his son,
Arthur (Lisette), (Robert (Dawn), Darlene (John), Linda (Calvin), Arthur (Vicki+), Randy (Melody), Jamie (Dwight), Justin (Sara); and three daughters, Elfriede (Alfred) Serfas, (Lorraine (Dave), Annette (Darren), Karl (Karen), Gisela Cook, (Norman (Kim), Troy, Kevin (Sonja), and Anne (Clifford) Siggelkow, (Curtis (Kylie), Travis (Chelsea). Along with 35 great-grandchildren and 17 great- great-grandchildren. Rudy loved people! Everyone who knew him felt his big welcoming heart, his joy and appreciation for life, his openness to share his life experiences and of course a lot of teasing and playful nature. He had a unique way of making people feel like they were his friend. After surviving WWII and being reunited with his wife and children, it wasn’t long before they made the trip across the pond to Canada in hopes of a better beginning. As a farmer, he was able to find work and together as a family they worked hard to forge a new beginning and eventually were able to buy their own farm in Bow Island, Alberta; where Rudy and his son built up a family farm. With many great farming years, Rudy and Magdalena were able to retire at an early age, moved off the farm and spent many years travelling, entertaining guests and enjoying life. Yet, their main focus was spending time with the grandchildren; whether camping, hiking, teasing, visiting, going on trips or watching sports. In his later years, Rudy enjoyed sharing stories of his life with anyone who showed an interest. His love for God has been the strength of his life and has shaped part of the legacy he leaves for his family. He will be missed, yet honored in our hearts.
His celebration of life will be held at Burdett Christian Community Church, 416 4 Ave, Burdett, AB T0K 0J0, on Friday, September 2, 2022 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Weston Lundgren officiating. Internment will be at Burdett Cemetery before the memorial service, followed by fellowship and a time for sharing stories at the church hall – because that’s what was important to Rudy. The family would like to thank the staff at the South Country Village for their compassionate care during Rudy’s short stay, and River Ridge Senior Village for all the years of care, provision and friendship. Also thanks to all of his family and friends for their love and support over the years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to the South Country Village, 1720 Bell St SW, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 5G1, River Ridge Senior Village, 4 River Ridge Dr NW, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 8V1 or a charity of your choice.
