Nick Richardson, 79, of Medicine Hat, Alberta, passed away, with his daughter and son-in-law by his side, on June 8, 2025.
Nick will be forever missed by his daughter, Pam (Stuart) Martin; son, Andrew Richardson; grandchildren, Naj, Jassy, and Anthony; brother, Peter (Patsy) Richardson, as well as nephews, Reece and Hayden. Nick is rejoined in everlasting love with his wife, Rita Richardson; parents, Geoffrey and Joan Richardson; and granddaughter, Zahara.
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, on October 25, 1946, Nick was full of energy and a zest for life from a young age. He was an active sportsman in his early years, taking part in swimming, rowing, rugby, and tennis. In 1976, he immigrated to Canada and began working in the logging industry alongside his uncle in Quesnel, British Columbia, marking the start of a life defined by hard work, adventure, and community.
Nick wore many hats throughout his life—logger, professional sheep shearer, farmer, and heavy-duty mechanic in the oil and gas industry—but above all, he was known for being a man who never sat still. Whether it was cross-country skiing in his younger days, perfecting his golf swing, or hustling friends at billiards (earning the nickname “pool shark”), Nick brought enthusiasm and charm to everything he did. He also had a lifelong passion for wild game hunting and loved telling stories of his adventures, especially about wild boar hunting back in New Zealand.
Nick had a deep appreciation for agriculture and rural life. He had a special love for rodeos, chuckwagon races, and anything connected to the land. He could often be found at local livestock auctions, enjoying the atmosphere and catching up with familiar faces. It was a world he understood and respected—a place where he felt truly at home.
In the late 1980s, Nick moved to Brooks, Alberta, where he built a life full of friendships and memories. After the passing of his beloved wife Rita in 2023, Nick moved to Tompkins, Saskatchewan, where he lived with his daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. In early 2025, he moved to St. Joseph’s Home in Medicine Hat, where he quickly made new friends and reconnected with old ones.
Nick was a devoted father, a proud grandfather, a supportive brother, a caring uncle, and a true friend to many. With a heart of gold, an unmatched work ethic, and a knack for storytelling, Nick touched the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A Celebration of Nick’s life will be held at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB, on Monday, June 30th, 2025, at 11:00 am with Pastor Shane Hein officiating. Friends and family are invited to attend in smart or western casual attire, just as Nick would have liked. In honour of Nick’s love for animals, the family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Medicine Hat SPCA, S.P.C.A., 55 Southview Drive SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 8E8.
