Dorothea “Dorothy” Elsie Yanke of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Fred Yanke passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at the age of 86 years. Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her children: Phyllis Day Chief (Raymond Duchesneau), Harvey (Yvonne) Yanke, Leroy (Cheryl) Yanke, Marilyn (Glen) Emmelkamp, Valerie Yanke, and Sherry (Kevin) Rissling; 19 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; one sister, Ida (Larry) Ehnes; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Dorothy was also predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Lydia Schmidt; one brother, Johnny Schmidt; and three sisters, Anne Urichuk, Shirley Lawson, and Jacqueline, in infancy. Dorothy was born on July 2, 1934 in Manyberries, AB. She married Fred Yanke on December 28, 1951. They settled in Orion, AB where they raised their family and she worked as a homemaker and a bus driver before moving to Medicine Hat in 1976. Dorothy built a career as a seamstress, was a fabulous cook/baker and was very creative. She enjoyed cake decorating, colouring, sewing, and Swedish weaving. She was very proud to have sewn the wedding dresses for each of her daughters. Dorothy was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 22, 2021 at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, with Pastor Bob Church officiating. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions the service will be by invitation only. Friends are invited to view the service via live streaming at www.saamis.com through the webcast link on Dorothy’s memorial page. Streaming will begin at 12:55 p.m. on the day of service.
