Don Sowa

Don Sowa of Burdett, Alberta passed away on Friday, April 2, 2021, at the age of 79 years. Along with his beloved wife, Vicky, Don leaves to cherish his memory: daughter, Kim (Alex) Kozody and granddaughter, Stephanie; daughter, Tamara (Travis) Stachniak and their children, Ben and Jasmine; daughter, Angela (Trent) Guest and their children, Abrielle and Breh. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary Sowa (nee Evaskow) and John Sowa as well as three brothers. Don was born on July 9, 1941, in Brandon, Manitoba and was raised in Brandon. He started his career in the bank and stayed there for about six years. Don then became a boilermaker, following in his uncles and brother, Johnnie’s footsteps. He was a proud boilermaker of 33 years and through retirement. Don met the woman who would become the love of his life in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Vicky Monette, and was married there in 1975. They remained there for one year as they welcomed their daughter, Tamara ‘Rambo’ into the world. In 1975, Don, Vicky and their daughter, Tamara moved to Bow Island, a small town he had found on a job while working in Medicine Hat with the boilermakers. They welcomed their second daughter, Angela ‘Inch’ as they settled into small town life in Burdett, running a coffee shop for a few years. This small town became a place they settled to raise their family and make their home. Don took great pride in his garden and loved to enjoy a peaceful day, afternoon, or evening tending to his vegetables and flowers; to make it a perfect day, he would enjoy a cold one too. Don enjoyed hunting with his friends visiting from various locations all over Canada and took pride in feeding his family the game from his hunts. As a part of his innate love for nature attracting hummingbirds, butterflies and bees to his yard, a great delight came with announcing the first robin he would see in the spring. If you wish to do something to remember Don, we ask that you grab a cool six pack, plant a vegetable, flower or tree; and watch it grow. A private family graveside will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Medicine Hat.
