Deepa Jayasundera of Medicine Hat passed away at the age of 77 years. His memory will be cherished by his wife, Thilaka Jayasundera and their three children Nipunie, Yosha and Asitha. Deepa was the second son of the late Jayasena and Alice Jayasundera of Kalagedihena, Sri Lanka; father-in-law of Chamath Perera, Thilan Gunasekara and Olga Jayasundera; brother of the late Siri Jaysundera (Sri Lanka Police) and late Sarath Jayasundera (Central Bank of Sri Lanka) and brother-in-law of Senaka Samarasinghe (Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka) & Chandani Samarasinghe (Vishaka Vidyalaya of Sri Lanka), Vijay De Mel (National Housing Development Authority of Sri Lanka) & Yamuna De Mel, Marlene Jayasundera and late Nalini Jayasundera; grandfather of Dinithi, Navith and Seja. Deepa completed his high school education in Royal College, Colombo, Sri Lanka and earned his General Arts Degree from University of Ceylon in Colombo Campus (now University of Colombo), Sri Lanka in 1964. He competed in weightlifting for the University and was a University colors holder. He started his career as a Valuation Officer at Department of Valuation, Sri Lanka. He joined Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) in 1971 as a Flying Officer. Deepa got married to Thilaka Samarasinghe in 1972. His best man at the wedding was his SLAF coworker, Tony Opatha who played for the Sri Lankan Cricket Team. Deepa immigrated to North America 30 years ago. He settled in Winnipeg with his family and his childhood friend and neighbour, Mr. Somasiri Wijewardana and his family, who was in the same neighbourhood. Deepa worked at Western Glove Works in Winnipeg and after retirement, moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta in 2013 to live with his eldest daughter, Nipunie and her family. After battling with a long term lung disease, he passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021. Special thanks to Dr. Virenda Saujani, Dr. Datta, Homecare nurses and health care aides and the staff on 2 North at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for their excellent care. Deepa will always be remembered for his love of sports and history and his active involvement in helping friends and families to settle down in Canada. Deepa’s funeral will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. with a time of fellowship to follow theraefter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility.
