Alfredo Humberto Aravena passed away at his home in Lethbridge on Saturday, February 13, 2021, at the age of 80 years. Alfredo will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 58 years, Blanca; daughters, Marcela (Brian Hennebury) and Claudia (Terry Murphy); grandchildren, Christina, Alex (Tia), Liam (Nya), Ernesto and Nicholas (Brittney) as well as his great-grandchildren, Oliver, Lorenzo and Bronston. He is also survived by his brother, Manuel (Juana); great-nephews, Chris and Maurico (Krista) and their family; son-in-law, Felix as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family members in Chile. Alfredo was predeceased by his daughter, Pilar. Alfredo and his family were the first Chileans to arrive in Medicine Hat, after the fascist overthrow of their democratically elected government in 1973. He was an iconic member of the progressive community in Medicine Hat. Alfredo played in the Chilean folkloric group, Amancay, and served on the board of directors of the Unisphere Global Education Centre. He loved to tell stories about his homeland. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Thursday, February 19, 2021, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery.
