Mavs rally comes up short, fall in Regina 16-8

REGINA, SK — Some quality payback for the Regina Red Sox.

In their first match against the Medicine Hat Mavericks since losing Game 5 of the WMBL Championship Series last August, the Red Sox mustered a 16-8 victory at Currie Field on Monday night.

These two will battle again on Tuesday in the second of a three-game series between the two reigning division champs.

Medicine Hat falls to 9-14 on the campaign and sits fourth in the WCBL’s West Division standings. The Regina Red Sox continue to inch closer to Weyburn for first place in the East, sporting a 14-3 record and now one game back of the Beavers.

Regina took hold of the match in the seventh inning, scoring eight runs on six hits. It came moments after the Mavericks scored twice to cut the Red Sox lead to 5-4.

Trailing 13-4 in the eighth, the Mavericks appeared poised to make a comeback, scoring four runs to trail by five. But Regina answered back with three more in the bottom of the eighth, and held the Mavericks off the scoreboard in the final frame.

Nolan Rattai and Collin Klingensmith led the Mavericks offensively, with Rattai batting in three runs on three hits, and Klingensmith scoring twice with two RBI. Hunter Cooper and Austin Sojka both collected two hits in the loss.

Junior Pimentel struck out 10 Red Sox batters over 5.2 innings but allowed seven hits and four earned runs before handing the ball off to Zach Mcdermott.

Mcdermott, a new face to the Mavericks pitching core, faced eight batters and allowed four walks and four earned runs over 1.0 innings.
