Giants cool off Mavericks in 11-4 victory

FORT McMURRAY, AB — A hot start, and a bases-clearing triple highlighted a strong performance for the Fort McMurray Giants on Thursday night.

Peyton Crispin’s lone hit of the night brought in three-runs, on route to an 11-4 Giants victory to open a four-game series against the Medicine Hat Mavericks at Shell Place.

This douses the recent momentum the Mavericks gained in Edmonton, where they opened a six-game road trip with back-to-back victories.

The Mavericks are now 2-1 on their season-high six-game road swing, and 4-3 on the regular season. The Giants improve to 2-4 on the early campaign, securing their first victory since May 31 against Lethbridge.

Fort McMurray got off to an ideal start, scoring three in the second, and another deuce in the third to take a 6-2 lead. After two scoreless frames, the Giants scored twice more in the sixth thanks to RBI singles from Brody McGrath and Gunner Rainey.

Mavericks’ Austin Sojka brought in Collin Klingensmith in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit to five at the time. But Crispin’s triple in the bottom half sealed the deal for a Fort Mac victory on a chilly night in Alberta’s north.

Starter Jaymon Cervantes takes the loss for Medicine Hat, lasting 5.2 innings and allowing 10 hits and six earned runs.

Ike Buxton collects the win for the Giants, leading off 6.0 innings and keeping the Mavs bats cooled off with just four hits and two earned runs.

The second of their four-game stanza continues tomorrow from Shell Place at 7:05 p.m.
