MEDICINE HAT, AB – Gold medal hopes at home for the Medicine Hat ‘AA’ Moose Monarchs seem to be fleeting after the team’s second loss Saturday at the 2019 Servus Credit Union ‘AA’ Tournament.

Taking on the visiting Edmonton Jays, the Monarchs saw a 2-1 lead evaporate in the fifth inning and were taken down by a 5-2 final.

After the first two innings went scoreless, Edmonton jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the bottom of the third inning with lead-off man Jacob Mireault crossing home plate.

Medicine Hat responded in a big way though, as Jaden Schwindt and Connor Drever drove in Monarchs runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead over the Jays.

Edmonton tied up the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning thanks to a walk by Schwindt with the bases loaded to cash in a run, before taking the lead just minutes later off an error by Medicine Hat’s Ethan Boutkan.

Not done there, the Jays added their final run of the afternoon in the sixth inning courtesy of an RBI-double from Colin Campbell to earn the victory.

Medicine Hat’s offence was quieted to only five hits, with the majority of those being made up by Drever and Tory Nelson with two each.

On the mound, Schwindt pitched five innings in the loss with two earned runs given up on four hits while striking out three Jays batters.

This comes after a 7-5 defeat at the hands of the Calgary Blues in extra innings for the Monarchs, who drop to a 0-2 record in round-robin play.

Other Servus Credit Union ‘AA’ Tournament scores from Friday included the Parkland Twins edging past the Regina White Sox 7-6, the Lethbridge Elks shutting down the Calgary Redbirds 8-5, and the Saskatoon Cubs torching Edmonton 16-3.

Saturday’s early games saw Lethbridge blank Parkland 4-0 to stay undefeated, while Regina dominated the Redbirds by a 15-3 count.

The Monarchs wrap up their preliminary schedule with a tilt against the Cubs at 6:00 pm on Saturday at Athletic Park.

As for the Medicine Hat ‘A’ K of C Knights, they play a double-header south of the border on Saturday night against the Lewistown Redbirds before wrapping up the weekend in Havre, Montana to battle the North Stars.
