‘I became a better player’: Vets Rodriguez, Wright excited for new Mavericks campaign

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Boys of Summer are back.

For the first time since lifting the Harry Hallis Memorial Trophy as WMBL Champions last August, the Medicine Hat Mavericks are back at Athletic Park for training camp.

The marathon-like campaign begins Thursday night, hosting the Brooks Bombers in the first of an extended 56-game regular season. It’s also the first Mavericks match of the incumbent Western Canadian Baseball League, which went through a name change following last year’s championship match.

Eight players from last year’s championship roster are returning, including self-proclaimed leaders Colton Wright and Sal Rodriguez for their senior campaigns. Both players will be heavily relied upon to fuel a dynamic team culture, which played a huge part in bringing Medicine Hat the league championship.

Mitch Bach of CHAT Sports caught up with the two infielders to hear their thoughts on returning to the Gas City for the summer, how they’re approaching the campaign knowing they’re the targets around the league, and how bonding on and off the field can help generate the same success as last year.
