Free-to-borrow bikes at the Visitor Centre

MEDICINE HAT, AB – There is approximately 115 kilometers worth of trails throughout the City and as you could imagine, that’s a lot of area to walk.

So, why walk when you could ride a bike?

The Visitor Centre located just off Highway 1 near the Teepee has roughly 10-bikes that you can use through their ‘free-to-borrow’ bikes program.

“It’s a pretty cool program that we’ve got going on here,” explained Abby Czibere with the Visitor Centre. “You come here, grab a bike, fill out a waiver, we photocopy your I.D and you’re good to go for the day.”

The only restrictions to borrowing a bike are:

  • Helmets are mandatory,
  • You must stay on the paved-trails,
  • You have to return the bike(s) before they close,
  • And you are required to fill out a waiver and bring your I.D (parents or guardians must sign for children.)

“We’re open from 9-7. So, you can take them for the hour or you can take them for the day, as long as you’re back before we close.”

Over the roughly four-years of offering this program, Czibere says the reception has been awesome.

“We get lots of Hatters that come and enjoy the bikes for their own use or they bring their company and they go for a bike-ride with those folks. The visitors passing through really enjoy it as well.”

The Visitor Centre will provide both helmets and bike-locks so you can fully enjoy your ride.

“Helmets are mandatory when you take the bikes out. You also get a lock so you can stop for coffee or stop for a bite to eat and keep ’em safe.”

Now, if you were to have any issues, Czibere says don’t panic.

“We always put the number for the Visitor Centre on the bikes and then you can give us a call.”

If you don’t have a bike and are looking for a new way to check out the City, Czibere says she has one message for you:

“Just come check it out. Come for a bike ride.”
