MEDICINE HAT, AB – Opening round action at the Medicine Hat Golf & Country Club belonged to the Mitches on Saturday, kicking off the 2019 edition of the Victoria Day Classic tournament.

CHAT TV’s own Mitch Bach was the lone golfer to shoot under par on the day firing a one-under, 71 over his first 18 holes.

He holds a two-stroke lead over Mitch Kurtz who was a one-over, 73.

A crowded men’s championship flight was then followed by a three-way tie for third place between 2017 champion Ryan Werre, Matt Taylor, and Keith Newton all at two-over par.

No surprises on the women’s side, with three-time defending champion Becky Martin holding a 10-shot lead after posting a score of 75 on Saturday.

Coming off an ACAC title with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers last year, Martin has won seven of the last eight Victoria Day Classic titles.

She’s followed by Cathy Fisher and Pat Hall, who are both tied for second place after shooting scores of 85.

Gary Kavanaugh holds a slim lead in the senior men’s competition after a strong opening round that saw him put up a score of 76, one shot better than recent Medicine Hat Sports Wall of Fame inductee Kelly Risling.

Risling is tied for second place alongside Carl Vaters, who also threw up a 77 on the first day of competition.

Moving day action began Sunday morning following a brief frost delay, while the 64th annual Victoria Day Classic will wrap up on Monday with final round play.
