Residents invited to Full Moon Walk tonight in Police Point Park

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s a typical May long weekend in southern Alberta.

Precipitation has covered most of the area over the past couple of days, deterring some residents from getting out of town for the long weekend.

If you’re one of those people and are looking for something to do this evening, Police Point Park is hosting their ‘Full Moon Walk’ at 8:15.

“There’s going to be one of our summer staff and one of our newer staff that was hired in the fall leading the walk,” explained Park Interpreter Marty Drut. “It looks like the weather forecast is saying the clouds are going to clear away. It’s going to be a little cool, so be prepared and dress accordingly.”

Drut has been working with the Nature Centre for 12-years and says these walks have been going on since he first arrived.

“They’ll go for about an hour or so and be looking for the full-moon rise, but looking for other things as well. I’m not completely sure what they have planned, but I’m sure it will be interesting and fun for people.”

In addition to the full moon, Drut says residents may see other things as well.

“A lot of animals will come out later on. You could see beavers, see or hear owls, some of the night-birds, maybe some bats are coming out if it’s warm enough and you never know, we’ve had reports of a moose again in the park. So, just be prepared for anything really.”

Drut says although the park is dog-friendly, he recommends you leave your pet at home during this walk, as they may disrupt the calmness of nature.

He added that if you miss tonight’s walk, you’ll have several other opportunities to check out the park at night throughout the remainder of 2019.

“Keep your ears open for others in the future. We do a couple meteor shower walks in the summer time that we like to have walks for as well.”
