City ready for any potential flooding

Medicine Hat, AB- Six years ago when flood waters hit Medicine Hat nearly 10,00 people were evaluated from their homes and damage to houses and infrastructure costed millions.

Following the floods, the city started building berms and barriers to prevent that from happening.

Right now the Saskatchewan River is sitting at a lower level than usual for this time of year.

It’s currently at about 48 cubic metres per second while the average for this month is about 100 – 200 cubic metres per second.

Merrick Brown, the director of emergency management for the city, says that despite the low levels flooding is hard to predict and can only be done so in advance of about four days.

“This year we actually practised the city hall flood gates on this one that happened a couple of weeks ago and temporary measures both within our husko barriers and our temporary measures such as our flood walls.” He said. “So the training actually took place this week, this Tuesday where we bring in various departments, we teach them how to set it up, it’s an annual process that we go through.”
