MEDICINE HAT, AB — In April, the Canadian economy had its best month of jobs since 1976, according to new numbers released by Statistics Canada.

The job report for April 2019 was released on Friday, with approximately 106,500 jobs, the majority of them full-time. Of those jobs, nearly 25,000 were in Alberta. The unemployment rate nationally dipped to 5.7 per cent.

However, Medicine Hat’s unemployment rate went up for the second straight month.

According to the numbers, unadjusted data for Medicine Hat show an unemployment rate of 13 per cent, up from 11 per cent in March.

Statistics Canada cautions against month-to-month comparisons in Medicine Hat, owing to the smaller sample size and seasonal factors that influence each month.

One year ago in April, Medicine Hat’s unemployment rate was 6.7 per cent.

When comparing the Medicine Hat-Lethbridge region, the unemployment rate sits at 6.4 per cent, up slightly from March 2019, with 6.1 per cent. One year ago, the unemployment rate was 6.1 per cent.

The monthly report had some good news for Alberta, showing an unemployment rate of 6.7 per cent, down from 6.9 per cent in March.
