Sierra Boulevard Southwest repairs to begin tomorrow

Medicine Hat, AB – One month after experiencing a road failure in both directions, repairs begin on Sierra Boulevard South West tomorrow.

The repairs were on hold as the city awaited asphalt plants to open after the winter and to make sure the right plans were intact.

Carlie Collier, a municipal engineer, believes the failure happened due to a mixture of the cold weather this winter and increased truck traffic on the only road in and out of Saamis Heights.

Since the failure, temporary mats have been placed on the road between South Ridge Drive and Sunrise Gate.

Collier says that residents can expect some delays in their morning commute.

“So we will have the eastbound traffic down to one lane as well as the westbound traffic well we do the repairs on the westbound lanes.” She said. “So people should be aware of that and adjust their travel accordingly so whether our coming to that Saamis Heights area in the morning you may want to level some time in there too spend a little bit of time.”

To help reduce the congestion in the area, changes to the signal timing at the Sierra Blvd/Strachan Road and South Ridge Drive have been made.

“There will be some delay at the intersection. We have tried to address the signal timing as much as possible, but given we’ve cut down that egress out of the area down to one lane, you’ll still see some delays.” Said Collier.

The repairs should take about a week and a half, weather permitting
