Street sweeping moving to residential areas next week

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat will be shifting its street sweeping program to residential areas beginning next week.

Crews have spent the past week cleaning school zones, boulevards and main arterial roads in the city, and will begin residential street sweeping in the downtown and hospital areas on Monday, weather permitting.

“We’ve have allocated that area as a priority,” said Craig Maunder, operations engineer with the city’s municipal works department. “It’s also a very small area, so we’re able to capture that, and there’s a lot of cars, and a lot of pedestrians, so it’s an important part of getting that done.”

The city is divided into 17 zones for sweeping. This year’s map can be found here.

No parking signs will be going up in areas at least 12 hours before street sweeping begins in a neighbourhood, says Maunder, who adds they often try to get the signs out a day before sweeping will commence.

“They’re also going to be notified through area signs at the start of communities on main roads,” he said. “They’re going to be seeing signs that are going to tell them when we’re starting the sweeping in that area.”

Maunder says its important for residents to do their part by moving their cars off the street when the signs go up for two main reasons.

“We have an operational thing that makes it easier for our guys to move the sweepers around, to place signs, to move the big trucks, to do that work,” he said. “I would say the bigger part of that it makes sure our communities are clean, our neighbours get the clean in front of their houses. Really, it’s doing a good thing if we can move our cars, it helps the neighbours out, and helps the community stay nice and clean.”

Maunder adds bylaw officers will be in the areas where street sweeping will commence, handing out tickets if vehicles are not moved.

If the weather cooperates, the full street sweeping program will be completed in six weeks.
