ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — A look at Alison Coffin, leader of Newfoundland and Labrador’s New Democratic Party:

Age: 49

Early years: Coffin was born in Corner Brook on Newfoundland’s west coast and grew up in Joe Batt’s Arm. Her father was a school principal and math teacher and her mother was a nurse.

Education: She graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with an economics degree in 1993 and later completed her master of economics degree at York University in Toronto, graduating in 1997.

Career: Coffin has taught economics at Memorial University since 1997 and has done consulting work for governments and businesses. She ran for a provincial seat in 2015 and lost the NDP leadership last spring to Gerry Rogers. She was acclaimed leader in March 2019 after Rogers stepped down.
