City to start drainage improvement project on Dunmore Road Tuesday

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat will be removing four trees on Dunmore Road to help improve drainage in one section of the area.

Starting on Tuesday, the four trees, which are located between 28 Street Southeast and Southview Drive, will be removed to create an engineered swale to help improve stormwater drainage in the area.

A swale, or a graded depression, is designed to direct and slowly release it to storm drains. The reduction of runoff speed will allow more water to be absorbed and alleviate a current drainage issue. The swale will be made out of concrete matting with holes to allow grass to grow over top. An image of the swale’s design can be found here.

According to a release from the city, the area has been seeing poor drainage, and has been causing water buildup which affects the road and backs up into the neighbouring residential lots. Affected residents have been notified about the projects.

Once the trees are removed and the swale is constructed, new trees will be planted. An arborist will be assisting with the removal of the trees. The city says the swale will be constructed in May.

Drivers are reminded to obey all signs in the area as crews are removing the trees and drive carefully when workers are present.
